You might be wondering what I have been up to since there hasn’t been much activity since February. You can find all of the latest work I have been doing over at everythingwaffles.com. This site continues my work with self-portraiture and you can enjoy every image that is recreated to become more awkward.
Here is just a taste,
Having started the book and creating videos online for the Everythingwaffles.com website, I have started a Kickstarter to help the project. I am seeking to raise $1,500 to complete all aspects of the project. More information about the project can be found at my Kickstarter page.
The funding for the project runs until March 6 however the project itself will take further months to complete. As the books are printed and sold, part of the funding will go to the original animal rescue center where I got waffles and also the Humane Society.
After working on the self-portraits with Waffles over the past year and half, I finally decided to bring all of the images to book. This book is more than just what I have shown and holds many images that have not been seen. With all of the costumes and source images, I believe this represents a survey of portraiture through the past few decades. The main purpose of including Waffles in this body of work is to insert a trending topic(cats) into portraits that followed trends during the time they were taken.
From the original photo above, my goal in this series of images is to portray myself in a similar setting as the original. This body of work stands as a survey of styles and photographic trends that circulate through the internet and a re-contextualized from their location online.
Along with this book, I have started a website to continue this series of images with not only photos, but videos as well. I approach these in a similar way to find trends of videos found on YouTube and elsewhere and match that style while using my cat Waffles to alter that meaning.
Currently this book edition has a limited quantity so please contact me if you may be interested.
Finally a new image has emerged from studio and a new approach to this idea. This image below was presented to a graduate level course in a new was I have not explored yet. Rather than printing a large scale inkjet print, I decided to project this image life-size onto a installation wall.
Normally I would print a archival inkjet print for a new digital body of work. However I approached this in an entirely new method to heighten the experience and interpretation.
Experimenting with presentation.
I mentioned a couple of months ago that I will be updating my website soon. I can now confirm that I failed at doing that and so you can expect a new guarentee of an update to my site in the coming week.
While I begin to pack up and prepare to move out to a new studio space, I am looking into some new studio lights. As you can imagine that the photo floods and umbrellas that I have been using for 3 years have reached the point of little use. Strangely I have become used to photographing myself with my cat Waffles that I need some lights that can be used with ease and stronger wattage.
I have come across a new company called Alienbees, which has a strange approach to their marketing. They are utterly obsessed with aliens and bees to the point that their user manuals have alien bees on them. Sounds like a MST3K movie plot.
This might be close enough.
These lights are so strange that I simply must have them. A pair would work great including a new greenscreen background. Waffles and I might use it to visit some exotic locations.
That being said I found a great photo the other day that I had forgotten about, a great display of American patriotism.
I would have done this photo myself had I liked torn jeans and an American flag. I guess a sword as well and some long hair.
Where will my new studio be? That information is on its way soon.
